Cape Cod Diary 5: In Which Ian Plays Catchup

We've had our expeditions to the beach, and even a whale watch, but I only want to talk about one thing, the sublime fried seafood at Mac's Seafood in Wellfleet. Lets ignore that Wellfleet is yet another quaint fishing village/artist colony turned into a haven for the rich. Yes that's true, but Mac's seems to transcend that. It's a fried seafood shack right on the docks with a view of the harbor and returning fishing boats. The smell of the ocean is a given on the array of picnic tables which makes up the seating. You buy your food at one window and pick it up at another, then you sit yourself down and eat. When the wind blows , which is a lot, kite and windsurfers streak across the harbor.

I have always loved simple but tasty food, and nothing fills that bill better than Mac's fried clam strips. Yes, they're batter fried and served with French fries (horrors!), but I dare you to not gobble up the entire plate. The fried fish is light and flakey, easily broken apart and eaten by little kid fingers. You can really taste the food as opposed to the mountains of batter one frequently finds slathering food of this kind.

If only the rest of Wellfleet was affordable by mere humans such as myself.
